MSc Sport and Exercise Management
The Programme's Target Market
This programme is designed for graduates or personnel with industry managerial experience who have not previously achieved a post graduate qualification in Sport and Exercise Management, who are engaged in the public, private, commerical, professional or voluntary sectors of sport and exercise industry and who may wish to specialise in sport, golf or exercise management.
Modes of Delivery
The MSc may be taken
- on a one year full-time basis
- two year part-time basis
- as continual professional development (CPD), one module at a time over an extended period
Programme Structure
Students will undertake the programme's core modules of business enterprise; operational; human resource; marketing; sponsorship and event management together with accounting and finance; governance and law.
Students support the aforementioned core studies by selecting optional modules from four specialised streams:
- Sport Management
- Golf Management
- Exercise Management
- Rugby Management
Optional modules are available in sport economics; human performance management; golf club, tournament and turf construction; nutrition and social epidemiology and special populations.
Programme Features/What will I learn?
Lectures: Lectures are delivered through the medium of case studies, group work, interactive simulation exercises all focusing upon industry-based issues. The programme’s lecturers represent evidence-based best practice in their field and are drawn from key sectors of the sport and exercise industry including NGB’s, sport law, professional sport, health and fitness agencies, sport management consultants, professional golf, professional rugby, entrepreneurial management and sport marketing and sponsorship.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must normally have obtained a First or Second Class Honours degree or equivalent in sport science, sport, recreation or leisure management, health science, business, commerce, management or cognate areas. Applications may be considered from other graduates with equivalent qualifications who have significant relevant industrial experience. International students will need to demonstrate English proficiency.
Application Procedure
The School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science approves all applications. Applications are reviewed by the Programme Director and approved at School level. All applications must be supported by official transcripts of the undergraduate degree. Applicants who have been approved by the School will be given either a firm or conditional offer online and will receive an email which details how to accept or decline the offer.

About Rugby Management
Professional rugby management is key to the development of the game at national, provincial and grassroots club levels. It ensures maximum opportunities for enjoyable and successful participation by players of all ages and abilities in a safe and efficient environment - both on and off the pitch.
About the Progamme
The MSc Rugby Management programme is centred upon the evidence-based best practice skill-set employed in professional rugby. With the aim of preparing students for a career in professional and club rugby management, it offers Core Management modules complemented by the following Rugby Management Modules:
- · Player LTAD and Welfare Management
- · Rugby Governance and Law
- · Managing Rugby Performance
- · Club and Union Operations Management
Programme Lecturers
Full-time UCD Staff lead the programme; they possess sound theoretical knowledge in functional areas of management as well as hands-on senior management experience in the sport and rugby industry.
Visiting lecturers have been recruited from the international, provincial and club levels of professional rugby management and coaching in Ireland and overseas. Senior managers from the IRB, IRFU, Irish Provincial Clubs and UK Premier League clubs with in-depth hands-on rugby management knowledge, skill-sets and experience contribute to the programme.
