K Capital Cup Round 2 Race Report

Round 2 of the K Capital Cup was held on Sunday, 25th March at Rostrevor forest park in Co. Down. The loop was on the short side (about 4km per lap and 5 laps for expert and elite women) but included a very steep and difficult fire road climb right at the beginning as well as steep downhill singletrack sections through forest with water crossings, log bridges and other obstacles to keep things interesting. The weather on the day was perfect and the course was mostly dry.

Well done to Cait Elliot who took 4th place in the Elite Womens category! This is an excellent result for UCD with Elites being the most advanced category in MTB racing. Oisin Boydell also achieved a strong result with 5th place in Experts.

See here for full details of the K Capital Cup league, and full 2nd round results.

LIMERICK TRIP

The weekend away in Limerick on the last weekend in April was a huge success. The Limerick Riverfest was on, with many biking related events including street trials, BMX and dirt jumping - all in the centre of the city. Colm Bradley from UCD took part in the dirt jumping event.

We also met up with the mountainbike club from the University of Limerick for a trip to the Ballyhouras mountains on the Limerick/Cork border where we did a 40km loop of cross country riding. The weather was excellent and although there was a lot of fire road, we also found some fast downhill sections.

On the Sunday MBUL took us to Cratloe Woods outside Limerick city to show us their favourite trails. The weather had deteriorated but this didn't spoil the fast technical riding and slippery tree rooted sections.

All in all it was a very enjoyable weekend with some great riding and we are looking forward to planning the next trip away.

XC Intervarsity League Round 3

UCD won the 3rd round of the National XC Intervaristy League in Killaloe, Co. Clare on Saturday 25th February.

Although none of the UCD riders took top postitions, we performed consistently and gained enough points to win overall:

OVERALL STANDINGS:

1st     2nd     3rd     4th     5th

UCD   ITT      UL   LYIT   UCC

 72        60      55      40      14

The course was very technical with gruelling climb followed by a steep

downhill section leading to the finish line. The lap distance was short and

the overall race times were short since there were only three laps. There

are some photos from the race up here:
