UCD Sports Scholarships
Background Information The pursuit of excellence is part of the mission of University College Dublin. In sport, the sports scholarship programme reflects the commitment of UCD to aspiring to the highest standards possible.
Sports Scholarships were first introduced at UCD in 1979 by the late Dr. Tony O'Neill. The aim of the scholarship scheme is to give talented young people the opportunity of developing their sporting prowess from a base here in Ireland. By combining sports participation with academic work in an ideal environment within the University, a safety net is provided for the Irish student and career prospects are, to a large extent, guaranteed. Therefore, career-threatening injuries or illness or some other unforeseen circumstances do not have the same traumatic impact. The individual is encouraged through judicious balancing of the time available to ensure that neither academic nor sporting interests are compromised.
David McQuaid became the first recipient of a Sports Scholarship for cycling. His scholarship period lasted from 1997/1998 to 2000/2001. Both Andrew O’Carroll (Road Racing) and Ollie Gray (Mountainbiking) were awarded cycling Sports Scholarships for the 2001/2002 college year.
Criteria for Awarding Scholarships There are several important criteria which must be met - academic qualification for a course must be achieved and the recipient of a scholarship must be prepared to commit him/herself to involvement in the respective UCD sports club. The scholarship student must represent UCD and only UCD in competition. Clubs which offer scholarships compete at a very high level and have to possess the necessary infrastructural components to facilitate a scholarship award. A satisfactory level of academic and sporting progress is essential, if the scholarship is to be renewed on an annual basis. Sports Scholarships are intended for persons of outstanding sporting ability.
Benefits of Sports Scholarships The range of scholarship benefits may include tuition fees, if applicable, maintenance, books, equipment, treatment of injury and travel to national and international competitions. The value of each Sports Scholarship is assessed on an individual basis by the respective club.
Club Scholarships U.C.D. Cycling Club award Club Scholarships on an extremely selective basis and are subject to the availability of funds. See link to Club Scholarships for details.
Sports Scholarship Application Procedure Applicants wishing to apply for a scholarship in cycling should complete the general sports scholarship application form. It can be downloaded from the following website: http://www.ucd.ie/sport/docs/generalapp2006.pdf. Otherwise the amended application form found below may be submitted.
Applicants must provide details of their achievements in their respective sport, attach a passport photo and provide at least two sports related references to substantiate their application e.g. club coach, team manager. Do not hesitate to include any extra information that may be relevant to your application.
Final decisions in regard to sports scholarship awards normally rest with the clubs concerned. When a Sports Scholarship application is received, it is passed on to the Cycling Club President. The UCD Department of Sport has then no further role to play in this processing. A successful applicant will then be asked to sign a scholarship contract with the Department of Sport and the Club President will appoint a ‘Scholarship Overseer’ to ensure that it is adhered to.
It is important to note that all applicants for sports scholarships must satisfy the academic criteria for entry to University College Dublin and must apply to the CAO in the usual manner. A sports scholarship award may be applicable to the Diploma in Sports Management Course.
