OF CAMPUS
Dublin affords
unparalleled opportunities to study the Irish theatre in performance,
from the renowned Gate and Abbey theatres to smaller, adventurous
companies like Rough Magic, Barabbas, Loose Cannon, Pan-Pan, Fishamble,
The Corn Exchange and many others. The yearly Dublin Theatre Festival
and Dublin Fringe Festival offer rare chances to sample a range
of works by international companies large and small. For interested
students, Dublin hosts an ongoing parade of public lectures, seminars
and workshops and conferences organised by all manner of theatre
practitioners and academics, some of which are sponsored by UCD.
University College Dublin, the University of Newman, Hopkins,
Flann OBrien, Kate OBrien and Joyce, has a fine tradition
of scholarship in Irish literary studies and numbers amongst its
alumni contemporary playwrights such as Thomas Kilroy, Tom MacIntyre,
Frank McGuinness and Marina Carr, Conor McPherson and Roddy Doyle,
and theatre practitioners like Cyril Cusack, Barry McGovern, Rosaleen
Linehan, Jim Sheridan, Joe Dowling and Ben Barnes.
The Blackrock Campus, situated by the sea
in the attractive village of Blackrock, is just two miles from
the Belfield Campus and ten minutes from the centre of Dublin
by train. The Centre was opened in 1989, with the Inaugural Lecture
given by renowned drama critic, Eric Bentley. The Centre is a
self-contained unit on campus, where we have the use of workshop
spaces, theatre space, library, computer services and other facilities.
In addition, our students make full use of library, computer,
sports and social facilities on the Belfield Campus. The UCD Main
Library at Belfield, with holdings of over one million volumes
and a valuable Special Collections Department, offers excellent
resources for study and research.
