Postgraduate Programmes

The UCD School of Architecture supports those who wish to pursue advanced research at either the Masters or PhD level and across a wider range of subjects.

A research degree such as Masters by Research or PhD involves the sustained and in-depth study of a specific topic, which is then written up as a thesis for examination. Research degrees involve students carrying out their own research and academic study under the supervision of one or more academic supervisors. The precise focus of research is agreed between the supervisor(s) and the student. Research can be carried out at Masters or Doctoral level. Entry to research degrees is usually by written application. All entrants will be assessed by the relevant Board of Studies.

Research Masters Degree

Research Masters degrees provide education and training in a particular subject through original exploration and research. A Research Masters usually takes a minimum of four semesters full-time or eight part-time to complete. The research culminates in a thesis which sets out the conclusions of the research undertaken. The assessment and award of the degree is on the basis of the thesis.

The UCD School of Architecture offers three research masters degrees:

Masters in Urban and Building Conservation (MUBC)

Established over 25 years ago, this programme equips students to deal with all the complexities inherent in rehabilitation and restoration of buildings, cities and landscapes. Rooted strongly in conservation practice and policy, the programme also involves detailed research into the history and heritage of the built environment.

Masters in Urban Design (MUD)

With a strong international outlook, focusing on emerging and developing theory, best practice, and case studies in Europe, the US and the UK, this course seeks to understand the Irish urban condition and to create innovative and place-specific solutions for development and improvement.

Masters (by Research)

This masters programme is open to a wide range of topical pursuits which are arrived at between the student and their supervisor(s). Areas of current research include Sustainable Building Design and Performance, History and Theory of Architecture and Architectural Design.

Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)

Making a substantial and original contribution to knowledge, normally leading to peer-reviewed publications, remains the core objective of doctoral studies. The PhD is a structured programme, designed to support students in achieving their academic and professional objectives.  A PhD typically takesfour years full-time (six years part-time) to complete. Assessment for the award of a PhD is on the basis of a thesis and viva-voce exam.
