University College Dublin and Cork Institute of Technology offer 4 year undergraduate degree progammes leading to engineering degree qualifications which are recognised by both the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK). University College Cork offers courses in Process Engineering and University of Limerick runs a one year Diploma course.

Not particularly. Obviously, if you have Honours Leaving Certificate Chemistry it will help in first year chemical engineering but it is not required as a prerequisite for entry into Chemical Engineering.

There is a world of difference between these two areas of study and the job opportunities are quite different for each. You should check out the information on the web page given below to get a clear idea as to where a degree in pharmacy will lead you.

There is a School of Pharmacy in Trinity College which provides two undergraduate courses, namely the B.Sc. (Pharmacy) Degree Course and the Pharmaceutical Technician's Diploma. The B.Sc. (Pharm) is awarded on the successful completion of the four year undergraduate course. In order to become a registered pharmacist a one-year training period must be undertaken.

Entrance to the Chemical Engineering degree programme at UCD is either by (i) direct entry from the CAO in the first year of the programme (DN071) or (ii) at the end of the first year of study students may enter from the undenominated student stream (DN077) Through the CAO we normally take in about 40 students by direct entry. At the end of the first year students from the undenominated stream (typically 60 students are taken each year into this stream) can apply for a second year place. There is at present a maximum of 46 places in chemical engineering from 2nd year on. There are other ways to apply for a place in the chemical engineering programme at UCD such as by internal (within UCD) or external transfers (from other third level institutions); call in or ring us and we will answer all of your detailed queries.

The majority of students will opt to get a job as a chemical engineer on graduating, working in Ireland or abroad. A small number will continue on with their academic career and study towards the attainment of a Master’s degree or Ph. D. by either research or as a taught course; some students will decide to take a “time-out” period for travel etc. before settling down to an career in engineering. Research students are paid and will normally assist with the teaching of undergraduate students while conducting their research. Students may remain at UCD for to complete their research degree programmes or may pursue a higher degree at any of the other third level institutions in Ireland. Many of our graduates have completed their studies in such prestigious international universities as Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Notre Dame, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, Caltech, McGill University, the University of New Brunswick, University of Cambridge, University of Sidney, Technical University of Berlin, to name but a few (click here for more Universities). The following table gives an indication of where recent graduates have gone in their graduation year.

New graduates can expect a starting salary in the range €30,000 - €35,000 per annum. If you opt for a post-graduate research degree then you can expect to be paid €10,000 - €15,000 per annum here in Ireland and $20,000 - $25,000 per annum if you study in the US.

The first students (3 in toto) from the fledgling Chemical Engineering Department graduated in 1956. In fact, the 50th Anniversary of this momentous event will be celebrated in 2006; all graduates take note.
