Research Interests
| My research work is focused on the engineering of surfaces to enhance their performance. Application areas include medical devices, solar energy and packaging. The research can be divided into three boroad areas as follows: 1. Functional Coatings - evaluation of how nm thick coatings can influence a diverse range of surface properties including cell adhesion, polymer to polymer adhesion (composites) and antibacterial properties. While these coatings are deposited by both PVD and PECVD techniques a particular focus has been on coating deposition using atmospheric plasmas. 2. Tribological Coatings - wear resistant and low friction coatings on tools and engineering components. These coatings are deposited by magnetron sputtering 3. Polymer Processing - Research ranges from the processing of biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) to the evaluation of the durability of composites in marine applications. Enhancing the shelf life of packaging in conjunction with U.C.D. Food Science. The use of recycled polymers in packaging and composite material fabrication. |
