PhD Funding at the Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering School

Recent European Research Council grant winner seeking 3 new top ranked candidates to pursue their doctoral degrees in Civil/Structural Engineering at the University College Dublin in Ireland to work on a cutting edge project involving city-wide laser scanning and computational modeling.

Candidates will join the dynamic and internationally recognized Urban Modelling Group and work in conjunction with two post-doctoral candidates and three other doctoral students.

 Each candidate will follow 1 of the 3 main topics (possible approaches listed a subheadings)

  1. Automated building identification from aerial laser scanning

  • ·        Full waveform analysis
  • ·        Missing pulse reconstruction
  • ·        RGB exploitation
  • ·        Database indexing
  1. Three-dimensional solid model generation for masonry buildings

  • ·        Voxeliztion
  • ·        Remeshing optimization
  • ·        Proximity analyses
  • ·        External feature identification for masonry buildings
  1. Overcoming unknowns in computational modelling

  • ·        Natural algorithms
  • ·        Fragility curves
  • ·        Sensitivity analyses

Compensation is generous with a 20k/year bursary plus full tuition (for EU or non-EU students) for up to 4 years, plus a personal computer. Spousal visas for non-EU candidates are also possible.

 An ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering from an internationally ranked university
  2. Hold a master’s degree in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering, geomatics, or computer science from an internationally ranked university
  3. Have strong written and verbal English skills
  4. Have at least 2 years of industrial experience
  5. Be a competent programmer
  6. Have a demonstrable interest in historic structures, urban modelling, tunneling, disaster management, and/or micro-climate modeling
  7. Have a record of peer-reviewed publications

Preference will be given to candidates for whom all materials are received by Dec. 15th. Skype based interviews are likely to be on Dec. 18, with decisions made immediately thereafter to facilitate those in need of visas.
