Developing optimisation models to prioritise transportation projects for investment

The decision of how much to invest in the development of transportation projects is very important. Optimisation tools are commonly used to prioritise investment in transportation networks. The objective of this work is to develop an optimisation model to prioritise and rank investment in transportation infrastructure. The model is developed using data from the Dept. of Transport in Ireland . The concept of the ideal solution has been used. This is a multi-objective model, giving more than one optimal solution. The research concludes that weighting assigned by the user to the attributes is crucial in the prioritisation process when the attributes are numerous.

The use of stated preference techniques to model modal choices on interurban trips in Ireland

The study examines the perceptions and preferences of passengers on interurban rail and bus and compares the preferences of passengers on these modes. This is carried out to identify where passengers feel changes are needed to both modes to improve services, and to contrast the services offered by bus and train in Ireland . The preferences and perceptions of passengers are collected using both stated preference and revealed preference techniques. The impacts that different types of stated preference questionnaire have on the responses of individuals can, therefore, be examined. The study also compares stated preference models with revealed preference models and examines if these can be pooled to take advantage of the benefits offered by stated preference and revealed preference models.
