Civil Engineers are responsible for many of things that we take for granted on a day to day basis. They design the power stations that provide our electricity, the reservoirs and treatment facilities that provide clean water every time we turn on a tap, the motorways we drive on and the traffic systems in our cities. Civil engineering is very much concerned with the environment: reducing pollution, designing waste management and recycling strategies, defending the coast from erosion and reusing building materials in our roads.
Within civil engineering there are four main fields. These are structures, water and environmental engineering, transport and foundation engineering. There are specialisations within these areas that touch upon every aspect of life and new ones are emerging all the time.
