About Us

The School of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering at University College Dublin seeks to educate undergraduate and graduate students in a research-intensive and industry-facing environment.  The Head of School and the Subject Heads are all Fellows of the IEEE, and with their academic colleagues they bring experience of undergraduate and graduate education, international research leadership and innovation in industry.  Alongside the academic staff, the School has a highly skilled cohort of technical, administrative and research staff.  The School is located in the large purpose-built Engineering and Materials Science Centre on UCD’s Belfield campus, 4 km from Dublin city centre, and facilities are excellent.

Students in the School receive a first-rate education.  We place strong emphasis on the scientific and mathematical fundamentals of the discipline, complemented by the development of creative design skills, as the best long-term preparation for a student destined for a lengthy and multi-faceted career in a world of rapid technical change.  As a result, our graduates can be found in leadership positions nationally and internationally.

The School has an excellent international reputation for the quality of its research in its specialist areas of biomedical engineering, circuits and systems, digital signal processing & communications, electrical energy, optical engineering and RF & microwave engineering.  Research conducted and graduate students educated within these groups have earned international prominence and have made a lasting impact on the Irish technology and energy sectors.

Much of our research is carried out in partnership with leading-edge industry and in collaboration with international academic and industry-based centres of excellence.  Our research groups have a strong track record of successful new company formation.  Researchers within the School have been highly successful in winning competitive funding from Irish and European Union schemes and from industry.

We seek

  • to equip our graduates with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed at the leading edge of the technology and energy sectors worldwide
  • to deliver excellent research in our areas of specialisation, collaborating with and ranked among the leading groups internationally
  • to work closely with industry, to encourage start-ups and to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in our research and education
  • to serve and promote the engineering profession and to provide leadership within engineering and scientific activities both nationally and internationally
