UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering

Scoil na hInnealtóireachta Leictrí, Leictreonaí agus Cumarsáide

The UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering is proud to be the foundation of many of Ireland’s high-tech commercial successes. Successful commercialisations of our research have been achieved across the healthcare, building management, semiconductor design and networking sectors.

BiancaMed

A major commercial success story of the School is BiancaMed, which specialises in non-contact sleep monitoring equipment. The company's founders include Prof. Conor Heneghan, who lectured in the then Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCD and holds an adjunct position in the School today. The company is based at NovaUCD, the university's innovation and technology transfer unit. BiancaMed was recently acquired by the global healthcare equipment manufacturer ResMed, retaining its staff and its UCD location.

Cylon

Cylon is one of the leading developers of building management systems, and was founded in 1985 from research carried out in the then Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Cylon produce both hardware and software that allows the monitoring and control of energy provision, heating, air conditioning, lighting and many other services from central and remote locations. Recent developments have included web delivery of BMS interfaces, and fully managed BMS solutions.

Decawave

DecaWave is a pioneering fabless semiconductor company. It was founded in 2004 by recognised global experts in the field of ultra wideband technology and its applications. The company is headquartered in Dublin and has a number of international offices.

Intune Networks

Intune networks was founded in 1999 by John Dunne and Tom Farrell. They built on their research into fast tunable lasers to expand into all-optical switching technology, which has the potential to dramatically increase networking throughput. Intune currently has over 120 employees.  R&D is carried out in Dublin and Belfast, and sales offices are located in the UK and United States.

Massana

Massana was founded in 1996 by Paul Costigan, who had worked in the Digital Signal Processing research group at UCD. Originally a provider of VLSI servies, the company later licensed its own proprietary designs, focusing on the acceleration of processor-intensive DSP tasks. Massana was acquired by Agere Systems, which was in turn acquired by the global electronics firm LSI Logic.

VoxPilot

Voxpilot provides interactive telecommunication services to companies, operators, and service providers.

Xerenet
