The School has a proud history of over 40 years of international level research.
Current research
Current research includes projects in biomedical engineering, advanced digital signal processing, circuits and systems, control engineering, optical engineering and RF engineering, to name a few. Staff
Three staff members are fellows of the IEEE, and the former head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a Life Fellow of the IEEE. In addition, two members of staff are members of the Royal Irish Academy.
Funding
The rich research programme is driven by the School's consistent ability to attract substantial research funding. The School is at present part of the Science Foundation Ireland Strategic Research Cluster examining Solar Energy Conversion. There are currently six active SFI Principal Investigator awards and one SFI President of Ireland Young Researcher award held by staff in the School. In addition, there are numerous other active and completed SFI grants registered in the School, including SFI Research Frontiers Programme and EU Research Framework FP7 awards. The School is also a popular choice for PhD candidates who secure their own funding, for example from the IRCSET programme. In total, the average research income taken in by the School each year is over three million euro.
Publications
The schools research output is published at the highest of international levels.
Commercial success
Over the past ten years, the School has launched a succession of strong spin-out companies from its research activities.
