Research and Innovation
Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering at UCD have a long tradition of excellence in research, much of it achieved in close collaboration with industry. Our staff are leaders in the international research community, and graduates of our research programmes have found success in industry and academia around the world. Successful commercialisation of research conducted within the School has been achieved across the healthcare, energy, semiconductor design and networking sectors, in companies such as BiancaMed (acquired by ResMed), Cylon, Massana (acquired by LSI) and Intune Networks.
Our research is conducted in six main areas:
Biomedical Engineering

Current areas of Biomedical Engineering research include Neuromuscular Systems and Neural Engineering, Cardiovascular Systems and Respiration, and Sleep Monitoring.
Circuits and Systems

Examining nonlinear behavior in a range of circuits and systems, including MEMS, energy harvesters and power converters.
Electricity Research Centre

An industry-university research collaboration seeking to overcome challenges related to energy provision, and to build human capacity in this crucial sector.
Optical Engineering

Optical Engineering research topics include fundamentals and applications of optics and holographic materials and applications.
RF and Microwave

Developing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models and software tools for high frequency non-linear circuits and systems.
Signal Processing and Communications

Addressing fundamental and applied topics in Signal Processing and Communications.
