UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering

There is a strong emphasis on Manufacturing within the school with expertise in areas such as machining, grinding, polishing and laser surface treatment. We have a large, modern, well equipped, well staffed machine shop with computer-integrated 2-D and 3-D profiling capability, solid-state and diode laser facilities for combined machining and surface heat treatment, as well as a full suite of machine tools. The school is involved in national, European and global projects with companies in the automobile, aerospace, semiconductor and precision engineering industries, including Daimler-Chrysler, Intel, Element 6, Sifco, Sandvik and ABS Pumps.

The expertise in Manufacturing is matched by that in Design. As well as undergraduate modules and postgraduate taught courses, a creative design ethos permeates all activities from undergraduate final year projects to the design of experimental facilities for postgraduate research.
