Prof John Kelly awarded ESB Outstanding Contribution to Engineering award at the 2017 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards

Prof. John Kelly, former UCD Registrar, former Dean of the UCD Faculty of Engineering, and emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering was presented with the ESB Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Award at the 2017 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards.

UCD honorary degree for Sir Ciarán Devane;

UCD has conferred an honorary degree on Sir Ciarán Devane, Chief Executive of the British Council. Ciarán, a native of Dublin, Ciaran was appointed Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support in 2007. The charity is one of the largest in the UK and provides healthcare information, support and financial assistance to millions of cancer sufferers across Britain.

The Winner of the Irish Academy of Engineering Parsons Medal for Engineering Sciences 2016 is Professor Tony Fagan of the UCD School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

Professor Fagan’s field of excellence is Digital Signal Processing (DSP), a discipline crucial to the modern world of high-speed communications, the internet, multimedia content and modern medical imaging.

Professor Tom Brazil has been elected President of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). The MTT-S promotes the advancement of microwave theory and its applications. These include mobile phones, Wi-Fi, radio and radar.

UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering Professors named highly cited researchers by Thomson Reuters

UCD Professors Da-Wen Sun and Colm P O’Donnell, UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, have been included in the 2016 Highly Cited Researchers list compiled by Thomson Reuters. Only those in the top 1% of citations by other researchers in science and social science made the list.

Professor Da-Wen Sun elected President of the iAABE

Professor Da-Wen Sun, UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, has been elected the President of the International Academy of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (iAABE), and become the Founding President of iAABE. Professor Sun is also one of the 33 iAABE Founding Fellows. Fellowship of iAABE is the highest honour in the field of agricultural and biosystems engineering.

2 UCD APEP PhD candidates, Philip Crowe (UCD Landscape Architecture) and Aoife Corcoran (UCD Planning), received a THINKTECH award from Minister Simon Coveney on December 7th 2016.

UCD graduates win RIBA International Prize

The first ever RIBA International Prize has been won by two UCD graduates for their design of the Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnologia (UTEC) building in Lima, Peru. Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara led the project on behalf of their firm Grafton Architects. The two women started the practice in 1978 soon after graduating from UCD School of Architecture.

UCD honours “exceptional role model” for women in engineering

Board member and trustee of Arup, the engineering company that first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House in the 1950s, Dervilla Mitchell CBE has been awarded an honorary Degree of Doctor of Science by UCD.
