Research & Innovation
Welcome to the UCD College of Engineering and Architecture Research and Innovation website.
The six Schools and many research groups within the College have a strong record in delivering internationally recognised research across the Engineering disciplines and Architecture. This is evident from our research outputs, including the increasing number of high impact publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, growing industry engagement, the level of research funding awarded to the College, and the subsequent postdoctoral and PhD research opportunities available.
The College also has a deep heritage for innovation. We celebrated this especially in 2011 with the centenary of UCD Engineering covering the Merrion Street years and the move to UCD and also the centenary of Architecture at UCD.
The College leads a number of research themes including Energy Systems, Critical Infrastructure and Bioengineering, and contributes significantly to UCD College of Science themes in Nanobio Science and Engineering and Computational Modelling. Activities include individual scholarship through to large-scale interdisciplinary programmes and on to more applied research, technology development and engagement with industry. See samples of programmes.
There are also seven Academic Research Centres established by the UCD Academic Council in the College. Each Centre comprises a Centre Director, academic staff, associated research staff and students, who have a common research expertise and work towards a shared programme of sustainable activity. Current Academic Research Centres include:
- Water Resources Research
- Bridge and Transport
- Biomedical Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Communications and Optoelectronics
- Adhesion and Adhesives
We face exciting times as the College’s research strategy and planning continues to leverage and build on past and current research investments to win additional funding and investment. By strengthening our participation in EU programmes, our links with industry and in commercialising research, we continue to add value and to benefit Ireland’s national economy. We demonstrate our value by advancing research and innovation in many industry sectors including engineering, architecture, energy, biomedicine, medical devices, transport, communications, construction and manufacturing.
