?23 July 2018
On Monday 23 July, coastal and marine experts from University College Dublin, Dublin City Council and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will be convening on Killiney Beach in South County Dublin to shed light on their latest research.
Hosted by the UCD Earth Institute, the UCD Marine and Coastal Research Expo/Beach Clean is a chance for members of the public to talk to researchers and find out what creatures can be found on Dublin’s shores, how Irish scientists are monitoring bathing water quality and the role computer simulations are playing in protecting our coastlines from flooding.
Prof. Tasman Crowe, Director, UCD Earth Institute: “Ireland’s coastlines are a wonderful natural amenity, with many social and economic uses. UCD’s multidisciplinary research community and our colleagues in Dublin City Council and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are involved in a range of projects that aim to help us to better understand and manage this valuable resource. We’re delighted to be able to share the fascinating stories from our research with local communities and learn how they engage with the coastal environment.”
Dr. Nicole Beisiegel, UCD: “About 40% of the Irish population lives within 5km of a coast. My research contributes to our understanding of how (extreme) ocean waves form and how they propagate. Working with the public and increasing ocean literacy is important because it can have a direct impact on people’s lives and decisions they make.”
Six researchers will give short presentations on their work, with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions afterwards. Following the presentations, attendees are invited to take part in a beach clean-up to help maintain and Ireland’s marine environment. Gloves (courtesy of CleanCoasts.org) and rubbish bags will be provided.
All members of the public including families, children, students and anyone else interested in the coastal environment are welcome to attend this event. The first ten guests to arrive will receive a copy of the new Ireland’s Seashore Field Guide, provided by the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
