Welcome to the UCD Earth Institute’s website. The Earth Institute is an exciting new initiative within UCD, dedicated to drawing together researchers from multiple disciplines to answer some of the most urgent challenges facing society in terms of sustainable living. From understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change, to characterising the resources of the earth, to working to develop smarter and more sustainable urban infrastructure, the mission of the Institute is to lead Ireland’s response to these major challenges and to make the country an innovation hub for green technologies. The Earth Institute was seeded by the activities of the Urban Institute of Ireland and in 2010 was awarded funding under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions Cycle 5 to be established as a research institute at UCD. We are currently running Ireland’s largest structured doctoral programme in Earth and Natural Sciences, and we are looking forward to moving into a state-of-the-art facility in Science Centre East in 2014. This space will encompass high quality laboratory and computational space, facilitating interdisciplinary research and the fostering of networks between ourselves and the other entities within the building, particularly theComplex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory (CASL) and the SFI CLARITY CSET for Sensor Web Technology. By pulling together so many different disciplines and research groups, we are confident that we can develop exciting and innovative approaches to sustainable development that will benefit everyone, both in Ireland and internationally. I hope you enjoy finding out more from the pages of this website, and feel free to contact me if you want to explore ways of working with us as we move forward. Prof. Chris Bean |
