Climate Adaptation, Mitigation & Geohazards
Climate change is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest challenges we currently face and is already having environmental, social and economic impacts across the globe. Researchers from the multidisciplinary Climate Adaptation, Mitigation & Geohazards cluster in the UCD Earth Institute are working at the forefront of national and international climate research to expand our knowledge of these impacts and to develop a portfolio of sustainable solutions.
Geohazards, from volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to landslides and flooding, present an ever-present risk to communities and infrastructure, a risk that is likely to be exacerbated by climate change. The work carried out by the research teams at the UCD Earth Institute is helping us to both understand the underlying processes involved in these hazards and to quantify and manage the inherent risks.
The principal investigators in the UCD Earth Institute’s Climate Adaptation, Mitigation & Geohazards cluster are working at the cutting edge of climate and natural hazard studies across a wide range of disciplines including: palaeoclimatologists examining responses in the biosphere to climate change hundreds of millions of years ago in order to inform current climate models; agricultural scientists exploring ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland’s agricultural sector; hydrodologists developing new techniques for flood forecasting.
