Policy & Economics

Within the UCD Earth Institute, the Policy & Economics cluster has an internationally recognised research and teaching expertise in the fields of environmental governance and policy, regulation and market-based instruments, environmental conflict resolution and mediation, the application of market-based instruments and environmental taxes, and examining the relationship between quality of life and the environment. Our approach to environmental policy research is interdisciplinary with significant expertise in the use of social surveys, modelling and GIS, environmental valuation methodologies, qualitative research approaches, and policy and legal analysis.

The Cluster members are committed to translating knowledge to action, playing a pivotal role in providing policy support to the EU during the development phase of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and it has provided direct policy-related advice to, inter alia, the Japanese Government, Irish Government, European Commission, European Environment Agency and the World Bank, as well as working directly with communities and stakeholders in Ireland. 

 

Cluster leader: Dr Mark Scott

Dr Mark Scott is currently MSc Director and Head of Subject for Environmental Policy in the UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy.An environmental planner by background, Mark’s research examines the social-ecological interface, rural land-use conflicts and environmental citizenship.
