Emissions: Reduction and Control

This group of researchers provides the Irish Agricultural and industrial sectors with the technology and expertise to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater. This will contribute directly to the national objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The main research areas include:

  • Development of dietary systems and management strategies to mitigate methane production and nitrogen excretion in beef and dairy cattle and to reduce nutrient and odour emissions from the Irish livestock industry
  • Technologies to model and remediate contaminated groundwater
  • Land-use strategies and carbon sequestration techniques to reduce carbon dioxide emissions
  • Computational models, micro- & nano-technologies to remediate toxic environmental pollutants
  • Evaluating the ecotoxicological implications of new pollutants (e.g. nanoparticles) arising from agricultural, forestry and other industries
  • Developing new technologies, including microbial and nanotechnology, and strategies that can be used for pollution amelioration in soils and wastewaters
  • Sub-surface geological CO2 sequestration
  • Identifying the potential of bioenergy crops in combination with C-sequestration techniques (e.g. Biochar) for mitigation of climate change
