“Why the World Needs Geologists:

Career Opportunities in Geoscience”

UCD Geology Workshop

Saturday 25th November 2017

10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.
in UCD School of Earth Sciences

What could you do with a degree in Geology? How do geologists tackle many of the 21st century societal challenges such as demands for energy, mineral and water resources, climate change and the threat posed by natural hazards?  Are you interested in taking a Science Degree with a strong emphasis on field work and good employment prospects?  If so, this workshop is designed for you.

Geology is unique as a subject in its breadth.  It draws on many of the subjects you will be familiar with - biology, chemistry, geography, maths, physics. This does not require you to be an ‘expert’ in every one of these areas. Many graduates play to their interests and strengths, and specialise after their BSc degree in an area they are particularly interested in.

Our Geology BSc graduates are highly regarded by employers.  Traditionally, a geology degree prepared graduates for careers in industries such as petroleum sector and mining.  Increasingly, our graduates are employed much more widely – in jobs addressing climate change, environmental monitoring and remediation, even the financial sector.

This workshop is designed to give you an insight into life as a UCD Geology student and into geological careers.  It will include taster lectures, mini practicals and opportunities for problem-solving.  Registration is free and lunch will also be provided free of charge.  Priority will be given to students taking their final school examinations (e.g. leaving cert, A-levels, Baccalaureate) in 2018, but students in the penultimate year of their final school examinations are also welcome to apply. To apply for attendance please complete the UCD Geology Workshop Application Form. Deadline for applications is Friday 17th November 2017.
