Ireland at School Director: Dr Deirdre Raftery

This is a research network bringing together expertise that is mapping diverse elements of the past, present and future of education on this island.

It is developing innovative research in the following areas

  • HISTORIES & HERITAGE
  • SPACE & MATERIALITIES
  • REPRESENTATIONS & READINGS
  • PEOPLE & VOICES
  • VIRTUAL REALITIES & LEARNING TOOLS

The network draws on the expertise the UCD School of Education, UCD Library and Archives, and UCD SMARTlab. The School of Education brings international expertise in the field of history of education and heritage issues while SMARTlab bring international expertise in technologies for education, and virtual worlds. The project team includes Dr Deirdre Raftery (PI), Professor John Howard, Professor Lizbeth Goodman, Dr Marie Clarke, Nigel Newbutt, & John Fahy.

Of particular interest are:

  • Photographs of school groups
  • Photographs of school buildings
  • Photographs of school activity (lessons, gymnastics, drama etc)
  • Photographs of school interiors (rooms, dormitories, workshops etc)
  • Drawings of schools or school activity
  • Plans for the design of schools and colleges
  • Copy books and text books
  • Medals, certificates and awards

 

To date, material has been contributed by many individuals and institutions. Images have facilitated research presentations at recent conferences in the USA, UK, and Sweden, and selected photographs have been published in the Irish Times, History of Education (Routledge Taylor Francis) and in Female Education in Ireland: Minerva or Madonna, by Deirdre Raftery and Susan M. Parkes (Irish Academic Press, 2007)

 

Roscommon School 1890s

If you know of a school building which you believe may be of interest, the IaS will arrange to have the school photographed for this collection. Samples of important school building styles that have been recorded todate include a range of nineteenth century national schools, district model schools, and convent schools.
