    The Academic Profession in Europe: Responses to societal challenges European Science Foundation (EUROAC and IRCHSS). 2009-2010

    The aim of this collaborative research project with other countries (Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, Romania and Austria is to establish how the academic profession perceives, interprets and digests recent changes in its societal environment and the organisational fabric of higher education systems.  As regards the former, attention will be paid notable to the growing relevance of knowledge, diversification and internationalisation.  For the latter, groups of Individual Projects will explore the impact of changes in government, management and evaluation, changing academic career settings and professionalization, both within academic roles and through modes of interaction and division of labour between new higher educational professionals and the academic profession. This is part of EuroHESC (Higher Education and Social Change), which is a programme of interdisciplinary comparative research into the changing relationship between higher education and society.  

    National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction 2009-2010.   Funded by the Department of Education and Science. Principal Investigators Marie Clarke and Maureen Killeavy. 

    The National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction came into operation in 2002 with the aim of developing a national policy on teacher induction.   It is funded by the Department of Education and Science and is based on a partnership model involving the Department of Education and Science and the School of Education, UCD and St Patrick’s College Dublin, the teacher unions, education centres and schools.    It is funded on an annual basis.   The aim of the project is to develop an effective programme of induction for newly qualified teachers and mentor training tailored to their particular professional needs and sensitive to the strengths, requirements and challenges within the Irish education system.   Currently the project operates throughout the country and it is based on ongoing research to establish current and emerging system needs and to evaluate the various levels of support provided for a wide range of participant teachers.  

    Maintaining an Ethical Global Perspective in teacher education. 2009-2010  Funded by Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs. 

    Principal  Investigator Marie Clarke. This is a one year funded project which seeks to promote  among teachers an awareness about social justice and development education issues. 

    Review of the NCSE Resource Allocation Process and Evaluation of Deployment of Resources in Schools to Provide an Appropriate Inclusive Education for Children with Special Education Needs (2009- 2010)

    Investigators: William Kinsella, Joyce Senior and Lelia Murtagh Funded by NCSE (National Council for Special Education). 

    Pathways to Parental Leadership - the involvement of immigrant parents in schools (Immigrant Council of Ireland in association with EPIM (European Programme for Integration and Migration) 2008-2011.  Principal Investigator   Dympna Devine.  This is a  project to promote and foster active involvement of migrant parents in the formulation of school policies and practices through the development of a training programme and tool kit for use in schools. The project also seeks to develop European/transnational co-operation by linking with NGO's and researchers across Europe.

    ISTOF (International System of Teacher Observation and Feedback) (2007) (D Devine with G MacRuairc and J Harford). Funded by the Department of Education and Science (2007 - 2009). The issue of promoting best practice in classrooms and schools has been at the forefront of educational research in recent years. This project is the first comparative Irish study to document the perspectives, practices and experiences of a sample of primary and post-primary teachers in relation to their professional roles in schools. Locating the analysis in the context of research into teacher effectiveness and school improvement, it is part of a wider international study which seeks to develop relevant measures for comparing teacher practices internationally. A significant component of the Irish research is to identify how teachers construct and experience their own professional practice and the factors they identify as key to the fulfillment of their professional roles. Field work began in Autumn 2007.

    Identifying the Professional Development Requirements of Special Educational Needs Teachers Working in Mainstream Primary and Post-primary Schools (2006) S Drudy and E O Gorman. Funded by National Council for Special Education.

    Gender and Senior Management Appointments in Education (D Devine with B Grummell, K Lynch and M Lyons): (2004-2007)
    Funded by the Department of Education and Science to explore organisational cultures and its influence on the appointment of senior management at all levels of the Irish education system. The study is the first of its kind to examine the cultural codes enshrined in senior appointments at different educational levels and across different sectors of education. Currently preparing papers and book proposal, as well as presentation at national and international conferences.
