Biography:
| Dr Deirdre Raftery has recently returned from the University of Notre Dame, where she received a Hibernian Research Award, for her current research on the history of Irish missionary orders and international education. Dr Raftery has also recently received a Ireland-Canada University Foundation Award, for archival research in Toronto in summer 2012, and she has also received a 2012 SCoTENS award. An international expert in her field, she has published many books and papers in the field of history of education, and education ideas. She routinely advises and consults on the education records of schools, colleges and convents, and she has given guest lectures and undertaken research in many parts of Europe, North America, South East Asia and South Africa. She was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, in 2010, and she was Visiting Research Associate at Girton College, Cambridge in 2005. She is a Life Member of Girton College, Cambridge. She has been external examiner / examiner of doctoral research at several universities. Dr Raftery's books include Women and Learning in English Writing, 1600-1900 (1997), and (jointly) Female Education in Ireland, 1700-1900: Minerva or Madonna? (2007) and Choosing a School: Second Level Education in Ireland (2007). Her book Emily Davies, Collected Letters, 1861-1875 (with A.B. Murphy; University of Virginia Press/University of Chicago Press, 2006) received the highly prestigious MLA Approved Edition award. Her examination of reading for children in Ireland in the long eighteenth century has was published by Ashgate UK (2009), and her latest book, Gender Balance and Gender Bias in Education: International Perspectives (jointly with Maryann Valiulis FTCD) has recently been published by Routledge (London and NY). Recently published (2012) work includes invited chapters for new books from Routledge and for Palgrave Macmillan, and articles in Paedagogica Historica, the Journal of Women's History (USA), History of Education (Routledge T & F), and Studies. Deirdre Raftery is joint Editor of History of Education (Routledge Taylor Francis), and a member of the Executive Committee of the History of Education Society (UK). She is a member of many learned societies and academic committees and boards, including the Gender Working Group of the International Standing Conference of the History of Education, and she has been education consultant on several EU funded projects. At UCD Dr Deirdre Raftery supervises the research of several PhD students, some of whom have already published their work and have received grants from the IRCHSS and the NUI (Mary L. Thornton Award). Dr Raftery was appointed Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Oxford in 2010, where she worked on new research for her history of Irish missionary nuns in education. In 2012 she convened the annual conference of the H-WRBI, at UCD, and she is on the co-ordinating committee for ISCHE London. She has given many keynote addresses, most recently at the University of Zurich in September, and will give a guest seminar at the University of Oxford in November 2012. |
Research Interests
| Dr Deirdre Raftery is an international expert in the field of History of Education. She has published many books and research papers, and has given guest lectures and presentations on her work at international conferences throughout Europe and North America. Her work utilises and develops histories and archives, with particular reference to those of schools, colleges and religious houses (convents). She also works on practice-based learning, in different professional contexts.

Outreach Activities
| Over a decade ago, Dr Deirdre Raftery was part of the team that established the Trinity Access Programme, at Trinity College Dublin. With a commitment to the provision of education opportunities, she developed a liaison programme between TCD and a range of Dublin schools in areas of disadvantage, running summers schools and a support programme at TCD. She pioneered a service learning initiative linking UCD school of education with the Royal Hospital, Donnybrook, providing a programme of intergenerational exchange and learning support. She is committed to choice in education and has co-authored a book, Choosing a School (2007) examining school choice in Ireland. She was Chair of the Parents Association of Sandford Parish National School, a Church of Ireland national school in Ranelagh, Dublin. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mount Anville Schools, in Dublin, which belong to the Catholic Sacred Heart Network of schools in Ireland, Scotland and Malta. In 2009 Dr Raftery was an AERA delegate on the People to People Ambassadors Programme to South Africa, visiting schools and colleges in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

External Collaborators
| Dr Raftery is currently collaborating on a major funded research bid with the University of Cambridge, the University of Hamburg, the University of Winchester, Radboud University, Nijmegen, and KU Leuven. Affiliations and memberships include: International Standing Conference of the History of Education; History of Education (UK); HWRBI. In 2009 Dr Raftery was invited by the American Education Research Association to participate as Citizen Ambassador on a delegation to South Africa in November, where she visited a number of universities and schools in Johannesburg and Cape Town. As part of her own research into the history of mission education, she has recently worked in archives and schools in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. |
