Winter is coming and to celebrate, the E.L.S. and Game Soc invite you to the biggest party this side of the Seven Kingdoms! We will feast, drink and ask you to partake in the game of thrones. Guests are invited to wear the colours of their favourite house or dress as any character from the books or series and there will be a prize for the best costume. The event will be taking place on Monday the 15th of April at 6.30pm in the Red Room and we invite you to join the festivities!
Our AGM this year will be taking place on Wednesday the 17th of April. All information in regards to the AGM can be found in our About Us section.
Launch of Inklings
The launch of our annual literary magazine, Inklings, will be taking place Thursday, 11th April at 6pm at the concourse of the old student centre. English professor, Dr. Ron Callan, will be awarding prizes for the best poetry and prose entries, and awards will be given to the graphic designer of the front cover. Contributors and non-contributors to Inklings are invited to read and partake in our open mic event and share our wine and refreshments. Inklings will be available for sale during the event. Afterwards, we're heading to Doyle's in town to continue the celebrations!
Sci-Fi/Fantasy Workshop with Author Paul Anthony Shortt
We're delighted to announce that Paul Anthony Shortt, a former UCD student and writer of the urban fantasy novel, Locked Within, will be giving a workshop to the society on fantasy and science fiction writing on Monday, 8th April at 6 pm in rooms 5-7 of the student centre. Visit From Vincent Browne
We, at the English & Literary Society, are delighted to announce that we will be receiving Vincent Browne as a special guest on the 28th March at 6.30 pm. An Irish print and broadcast journalist, non-practicing barrister and presenter of the current affairs programme, "Tonight with Vincent Browne," he has agreed to speak to the society about political journalism before taking questions from the audience. All members are welcome to attend.
NaNoWriMo Writing ClinicsFor those of your attempting to finish up the NaNoWriMo novels, the ELS are hosting drop-in writing clinics on Wednesday 28th, Thursday 29th and Friday 30th of November. The clinics will be taking place from 2-6 on Wednesday and Thursday, and 3-8 on Friday in meeting rooms 2 and 3 of the student centre. There will be tea as always and hopefully some last-minute catching up on the wordcounts!
Ice-skating and fun!To celebrate the end of term, the ELS are heading to the RDS for some ice-skating and then into town for a meal. The event will take place on Wednesday, 28th November. The plan is to meet at the main bus stop in front of the campus (on the N11) and get a bus to the RDS for ice-skating at 6.40pm. Afterwards, we plan to head into town for a meal at Captain America's.
Slenderman Comes to UCDThis Halloween, the English and Literary Society is teaming up with the Wolrd Aid Society and Film Society to organise a Slenderman Murder Mystery Night. The event will be taking place Thursday the 25th at 5pm in the Astra hall. It is €4 for entry and all the proceeds will go to charity. The murder mystery night will go on for an hour and a half, before a small Halloween party at the Astra hall. Refreshments will be provided. Hope to see everyone there!
Wanted: Events OfficerThe English and Literary society are currently on the lookout for both an events officer and an OCM (Ordinary committee member). If you are interested in either of those positions, e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Additionally, we're hosting an EGM on Thursday the 18th of October where we will be electing the new committee members. The election will take place directly after our novel-writing workshop which starts at 6 in meeting rooms 5-7 at the new student centre.
First WorkshopOur first workshop of the year will be taking place on the 9th of October at 6pm in meeting room 6 of the new student centre. Hope to see you there!
Meet & Greet/Open-Mic NightWe're kicking off the year with a meet & greet/open-mic night on Wendesday, the 3rd of October. The event will take place in the Blue Room in the student centre and everyone is welcome, whether they wish to do a reading/play some music or just hang out and have fun!

Welcome to the brand new website of UCD's English and Literary society. This year, we have a whole range of events planned, beginning with our fresher's week events, which will include a movie night and mad hatter's party. Throughout the year, we have many fun and interactive workshops planned, along with various guest speakers who will impart knowledge on many different spectrums of the literary industry and literature itself.
This year, we also have a brand new bookclub, where a range of literature will be read and discussed amongst members. We have also set up a brand new online forum in order to make it easier for our members to share their literary works.
