Fellow Level 1

Incoming candidates with 0-3 years post PhD experience

Fellow Level 2

Incoming candidates with 3+ years post PhD experience

Both Fellowships Level 1 & 2 are open to candidates of any nationality who, at the time of the deadline for submission of proposals, shall not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Ireland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

Reintegration

Fellow Level 3

For researchers of all nationalities who meet the following criteria:

(i) hold a doctoral degree;

(ii) have carried out research in a Third Country for at least 3 years in the last 5 years at the time of the deadline for submission of proposals; and

(iii) were resident in Ireland for over four years before the commencement of their research in the Third Country.

All applicants must, at the time of the deadline for submission of proposals, be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. This description also covers those researchers who have been working for at least four years full time equivalent in research, but not working on a PhD. Examples include: someone with MD (medical doctor, which is not considered equivalent to a PhD in the Marie Curie Actions) or a research assistant in academia or industry. 

Fellowships numbers and duration

The UCD ENERGY21 Programme will offer 21 Fellowships in total across three Calls - indicative numbers for each Call are outlined in Table 1. The total duration of the Fellowship will be 24 months and will be divided into three phases:

  • 9 months for the initial phase
  • 6 months for the outgoing phase
  • 9 months for the return phase.

If submitted proposal requires another distribution of time between the phases, a more appropriate ratio can be proposed by the applicant and agreed by the applicant’s mentor. However, the outgoing phase cannot be shorter than 3 months and cannot exceed 9 months.

*Expected start date is flexible to accommodate previous commitments of successful applicants. It is hoped that the successful Fellows will be able to start no later than within a period of 4 months of Fellowship acceptance.
