The English Graduate Society
About the Society
The English Graduate Society was inaugurated in the 2008-2009 academic year. The Society was founded after a number of postgraduates in the School of English, Drama and Film identified the lack of a sense of community among the School’s postgraduate cohort. Therefore the Society’s overall aim is to help foster a support network among the 160 or so registered School graduates.
This network may be beneficial on various levels. The postgraduate experience can be rather solitary and challenging. This can be particularly acute for research-only students but may also be experienced by Masters’ students who are new to UCD. From a social point of view, befriending other postgraduates creates a natural support network which has both emotional and intellectual benefits. Meeting people from within and outside your own area of research can be stimulating and insightful. Involvement in the English Graduate Society also gives postgraduates, and particularly those who become involved at an organisational level, the opportunity to acquire a wide range of transferable skills, such as communication and liaison, organisation and event management, administration, team work and innovation.
