MA Film Studies
Programme Description
The MA in Film Studies degree path which provides research opportunities for students at an advanced level, may be taken in the following configurations :
(a) a one year programme or
(b) as stage one of a two year M.Litt in Film Studies or
(c) as stage one of a three year structured PhD in Film Studies
Students must acquire 90 credits to graduate with the MA in Film Studies, 180 credits to graduate with the M.Litt in Film Studies and 270 credits to graduate with the PhD in Film Studies. The programme modules listed below are designed to facilitate the one year MA in Film Studies. Modularised pathways to M.Litt in Film Studies and PhD in Film Studies qualification should be discussed by prospective applicants on an individual basis with Centre for Film Studies staff.
All three pathways above are designed to provide advanced education for people interested in pursuing academic careers or in working in research, education and / or focussed professional areas. The essence of the programmes is the completion of a major research based dissertation which makes an original contribution to knowledge in the researcher's discipline.
Core modules:
- Thesis (15,000 words) (45 credits)
- Film Theory & Culture (10 credits)
- Research Skills (Film specific) ( 5 credits)
Option modules:
- Documentary (10 credits)
- Italian Cinema (10 credits)
- Chick Flicks: Women and Hollywood Storytelling (10 credits)
- Stardom & Celebrity (10 credits)
- Irish Cinema (10 credits)
- Topics in Television Studies/Digital Culture Studies (10 credits)
Admissions & Closing Date:
Normal qualification for admission is a First Class Honours or a Second Class Honours, Grade One. Applications from graduates in a wide range of (customarily humanities) subjects are considered. The closing date for MA in Film Studies and M.Litt in Film Studies applications to the 2011-12 programme is June 30th, 2011. In exceptional cases an early offer or early conditional offer may be made provided all application douments are supplied. Applicants are welcome (and indeed encouraged) to apply earlier. Candidates interested in making application to the Ph.D programme in Film studies should contact the Head of Film studies directly.
Degree Assessment:
Core module credits account for 60 of the required 90 credits. The remaining 30 credits are acquired from the menu of Option modules on offer each year.
The core Thesis module requires the submission of a supervised 15,000 word research work. Choice of thesis is decided in consultation with the Head of Subject at the Centre for Film Studies.
The core Research Skills module is taken in tandem with the Thesis module and is conducted with the aim of introducing students to the vocabulary and methodology of research as a discipline in its own right. Assessment is via one short written submission.
