ENG40790 Metropolis: Modernism and after
This module examines representations of the metropolis and of metropolitan experience in modernist and late twentieth century literature, cinema, and critical theory. It focuses on the relationship between aesthetic representation and social space, and encourages students to engage with critical theories of the urban environment and metropolitan modernity in addressing how the metropolis has been figured in twentieth century writing and film. The module will include detailed discussion of the following texts:

Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway
Sam Selvon, The Lonely Londoners
J.G. Ballard, Crash
Iain Sinclair, White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings.
