Research Degrees
The MLitt and the PhD are the two higher research degrees awarded for the study of literature. Both are pursued by independent research, in consultation with a supervisor or supervisory team. The MLitt usually take two years to complete, and can be a survey of existing criticism of a thesis topic. The PhD normally takes three to four years, and is an original contribution to knowledge in the subject. The School offers expert supervision in all major areas of Anglo-Irish, English and American Literature, Drama Studies, Film Studies, and a wide variety of archival, thematic and theoretical projects.
In general, applicants for the MLitt and PhD must hold a BA and MA or equivalent qualifications, with a distinguished record of academic achievement. We also pay close attention in our admissions process to the quality of applicants' research proposals and referees' recommendations. Please consult the application guidelines below for further information about application procedures and requirements.
You can apply to the School without identifying a potential supervisor, and if you are successful, a supervisor or supervisory team will be recommended as part of the offer made to you. However, it may be beneficial in shaping your research proposal to identify and contact a potential supervisor. To identify potential supervisors, please visit the staff and research pages, or you can contact the co-ordinator of graduate studies in the School.
