Biography:
| Gerardine Meaney is Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation in the College of Arts and Celtic Studies, Director of the Centre for the Study of Gender, Culture and Identities and of the IRCHSS funded Graduate Research and Education Programme in Gender, Culture and Identities. She was previously Director of Irish Studies and Director of the Centre for Film Studies at University College Dublin. She is the author of (Un)like Subjects: Women, Theory, Fiction (London and New York: Routledge, 1993), a co-editor of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing: Women’s Writing and Traditions, volumes 4 and 5 (Cork: Cork University Press, 2002), a study of Pat Murphy’s film, Nora (Cork: Cork University Press and the Film Institute of Ireland, 2004) and of numerous articles on gender and Irish culture, with particular emphasis on Film, Literature and Drama. Previoust research projects include the ‘Women in Modern Irish Culture’ database, with Professor Maria Luddy (University of Warwick), funded by the AHRC; ‘Women in Public and Cultural Life in Twentieth Century Ireland’ with Dr Bernadette Whelan (University of Limerick) and Professor Mary O’Dowd (Queen’s University Belfast), funded by the HEA North-South Research collaboration programme. Current projects include Inventing and Reinventing the Irish Woman with Dr Bernadette Whelan (University of Limerick) and Professor Mary O’Dowd (Queen’s University Belfast) funded by IRCHSS and an edition of the Diaries of Rosamond Jacob, 1908-60, also with Professor Luddy, funded by the University of Warwick and the Irish Women’s History Project. She is general editor of the Liverpool University Press series of new critical editions of Irish Women’s Writing. |

Dr Bernadette Whelan Dept. Of History, University of Limerick. Dr Whelan’s research interests include Irish foreign policy, American-Irish diplomacy, Irish women's history, and women and warfare. She is the author of United States foreign policy and Ireland. From empire to independence (Four Courts, 2006) and Ireland and the Marshall Plan, 1947-57 (Four Courts Press: 2000) Further publications also include with Michael Holmes and Nicholas Rees,The poor relation. Irish foreign policy and the third world (Trocaire/Gill and MacMillan: 2000), with ed. M Whelan Women and Paid Work, 2000. Professor Mary O’Dowd, School of History and Anthropology, Queen’s University Belfast. Her research interests have focussed on early modern Ireland and more recently on women and gender in Irish history. She was a founding member of the Women’s History Association of Ireland and served as president of the International Federation for Research in Women’s History, 2000–2005. She has been the History editor of the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, section C since 1993. Professor Maria Luddy, School of History, University of Warwick, author of Prostitution and Irish Society, 1800-1940 (Cambridge, 2007), specialises in the social and political history of 19th and 20th century Ireland, examining in particular the history of women. She has published books and articles on women and philanthropy; 'outcast' women in Irish society; women's involvement in religious communities; the role of nuns in workhouse nursing and biographies of Isabella M. S. Tod and Hanna Sheehy Skeffington.From 1997 to 2001 she was Director of the Women's History Project, which was based in Dublin and funded by the Irish Government. She is especially concerned with the social and political attitudes expressed towards 'deviant' or 'outcast' groups in Irish society, the impact such attitudes had on the material lives of such groups and the significance of such attitudes in developing concepts of Irish national identity, particularly in the period between 1890 and 1930.
