Biography:
| Tony Roche was raised and educated in Dublin, receiving his BA (Mod) from Trinity College in 1973. He was awarded his MA and PhD at the University of California at Santa Barbara and during the 1980s was Assistant Professor of Modern Drama at Auburn University, Alabama. He joined the English Department at UCD in 1990 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1999. His Contemporary Irish Drama was published in 1994; and he was editor of the Irish University Review from 1997 until 2002. He published The UCD Aesthetic:Celebrating 150 Years of UCD Writers in 2005 and The Cambridge Companion to Brian Friel (2006). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. |
Research Interests
| Contemporary Irish drama; the writings of JM Synge; Beckett; Irish womens writing; world theatre Current Research: A book entitled Brian Friel: Theatre and Politics, is in progress and strong interest has been expressed in its publication by Macmillan Palgrave. The book will draw extensively on the Brian Friel Archive in the National Library of Ireland, which my President's Research Fellowship from UCD in 2006-2007 has enabled me to work through, and will be the first full-length critical monograph to do so. Expected date of completion: 2008. Expected publication date: 2009. |
