Biography:

Tony Roche was raised and educated in Dublin, receiving his BA (Mod) from Trinity College in 1973. He was awarded his MA and PhD at the University of California at Santa Barbara and during the 1980s was Assistant Professor of Modern Drama at Auburn University, Alabama. He joined the English Department at UCD in 1990 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1999. His Contemporary Irish Drama was published in 1994; and he was editor of the Irish University Review from 1997 until 2002. He published The UCD Aesthetic:Celebrating 150 Years of UCD Writers in 2005 and The Cambridge Companion to Brian Friel (2006). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006.

Research Interests

Contemporary Irish drama; the writings of JM Synge; Beckett; Irish womens writing; world theatre

Current Research:
A book entitled Brian Friel: Theatre and Politics, is in progress and strong interest has been expressed in its publication by Macmillan Palgrave. The book will draw extensively on the Brian Friel Archive in the National Library of Ireland, which my President's Research Fellowship from UCD in 2006-2007 has enabled me to work through, and will be the first full-length critical monograph to do so. Expected date of completion: 2008. Expected publication date: 2009.

Teaching Interests

Undergraduate teaching:
Have devised and taught lecture courses in all three undergraduate years: on Anglo-Irish Literature (with Dr. Catriona Clutterbuck, Mr. Brian Donnelly, Professor Declan Kiberd); on Drama (with Professor Christopher Murray and Dr. John Brannigan); on Literary Genres (with Professor Andrew Carpenter, Dr. Frank McGuinness and Dr. Nerys Williams).
Have devised and taught undergraduate seminars on Irish Writers of the 1930s; Harold Pinter; Brian Friel; and Joyce's Ulysses.
Head of First Year Modern English from 1994-1997 with responsibility for organising and co-ordinating lectures, tutorials and exams for 450 students (with Professor J.C.C. Mays); joint co-ordinator for First Year, 2002-2005
Modular convenor of First Year Course Course entitled ‘Literary Genres', Second Semester (2005-6) with responsibility for overall coordination.
Modular Convenor for Second Year Core Course entitled ‘Twentieth Century Drama, Second Semester (2007-8) with responsibility for overall coordination
M.A. in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama: have helped to organise and teach this M.A., offering an annual seminar on the drama of the Irish Literary Revival, and on Samuel Beckett and Contemporary Irish Drama; have supervised four MA minor theses per annum across the spectrum of Anglo-Irish writers
Director of Dissertations: M. Litts. supervised include a thesis on James Plunkett's treatment of the Dublin Lock-Out through the various media of radio, stage, novel and TV and a thesis on Joyce's negotiation of the local.
Have directed completed Ph.Ds. on Lady Gregory's drama; on Joyce and Trieste; on Yeats, Bowen, Banville and the Big House; on Louis MacNeice; on Beckett and Philosophy; on Brendan Kennelly's poetry and on the Irish Roots of the Guthrie Theatre (these last two still in progress)
