Welcome to Film Studies at UCD
- New Appointment in Film Studies
Dr Julie Passanante Elman has been appointed to a four-year lectureship in Media and Cultural Theory. Since earning her Ph.D in 2009, Dr Elman has been a Faculty Fellow/Visiting Assistant Professor at NYU. Her research interests centre on comparative media studies, cultural theory, twentieth century cultural history and critical sexuality studies. Her first book is entitled Troubling Teen: Disability, Sexuality and the Rehabilitation of American Youth and is under review with NYU Press. Her second book in progress is a study of “diagnostic media” that considers the rise of talkshow therapy, reality tv, WebMD and the WiiFit gaming system.
Dr Elman's MA module, Disability in Global Media, will examine disability as it has been represented in mainstream and independent film, television, memoir, and stand-up comedy. The course will familiarize students with some major strands of disability theory, relating them to and understanding them through cultural production and representation; disability history; lived experiences; and activist movements.
- The UCD School of English, Drama and Film is pleased to welcome Professor Richard Dyer (King's College, London) as Distinguished Adjunct Professor in Film Studies.
