The Roger McHugh Memorial Doctoral Scholarship (Anglo-Irish Literature)

The School of English, Drama and Film, University College Dublin, is pleased to announce the opening of the 2015 competition for the Roger McHugh Memorial Doctoral Scholarship (Anglo-Irish Literature).

The award comprises an annual bursary of €5,000 for a doctoral student commencing a PhD in a topic related to Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama at UCD, in September 2015.  The award can held by the successful student for a maximum of four years, subject to satisfactory performance by the holder each year, and with respect to terms and conditions below.

Background to the Award:

This award was established in memory of Roger McHugh, the founding Professor of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama, who taught at UCD until the late 1970s.  It was made possible through the generosity of Professor McHugh’s wife, Patricia, and children, Muireann, Fíona, Conor and Cian.  An award for academic excellence, it commemorates his pioneering work as a scholar, editor and teacher and his achievement in setting up a world-class postgraduate programme in the subject.

Terms and Conditions:

In the event of the recipient’s subsequently receiving an award of greater financial value (e.g. IRC Government of Ireland doctoral fellowship), the award will cease at the end of the academic year in question.

Application Process:

  • Applicants must be new entrants to the PhD programme (commencing September 2015).
  • Applicants for the award must, prior to application for the scholarship, have applied to and been accepted by the School of English, Drama and Film, with a doctoral project in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama.
