Laurence Crowley Lecture Series - Advanced Innovative Biotechnologies
Lecture Title Advanced Innovative Biotechnologies: a new approach to their regulation and governance Regulation of biotechnology based industries includes many examples where well-meaning decisions have unintentionally stopped fruitful lines of innovation, have needlessly delayed the introduction of societally useful innovations and have prioritised incremental over disruptive innovation. There is a new understanding among governments and regulatory bodies that, in order to achieve the expected benefits from public investment in basic bio-science research, regulatory systems will need to become smarter and more adaptive and proportionate to the risks and benefits of innovative biotechnologies. However so far moves in this direction have been piecemeal and uncoordinated. At this lecture, we welcome Professor Joyce Tait to discuss a new approach to achieving the necessary adaptation, involving the creative use of standards in a more equitable relationship with regulatory systems than they have had in the past.
