Tackling environmental challenges - Earth Systems scientists at UCD - Image courtesy of NASA

After decades of human progress taking place at ever-increasing speed, we are now facing planetary problems in regard to our use of resources and the environment.  Climate change, influenced by greenhouse gases generated from production, transport and even animal husbandry, has a global impact as patterns of drought and flooding are altered with sometimes devastating consequences.

We are facing the challenge of how to deal with these global issues before they ruin our future and the future of the planet. UCD experts across a range of different disciplines are working in tandem on different pieces of the earth system jigsaw.

Understanding the complex interactions of the earth, its atmosphere and climate requires a re-integration of the traditional geo-science/geo-physics disciplines.  The main driver for the study of earth systems at this time is the potential impact of climate change. Secondary drivers include water supply and energy sustainability.

To tackle the issues requires a cross-disciplinary approach and at UCD, meteorologists, geologists, botanists and geneticists share their expertise with chemists,  engineers, geographers, planners, economists and lawyers in a collaborative effort to sustain our future.
