Organisation:

KTL is a state research institute led by Director General, Prof., MD Pekka Puska. The institute is engaged in epidemiological, nutritional, biochemical, immunological, genetic, toxicological, and microbiological research areas related to public health. The personnel are about 900. The Nutrition Unit (headed by Professor Pirjo Pietinen) is the main unit in KTL responsible for the nutrition research and development of methods of food consumption and nutrient intake. The Unit studies the associations between dietary factors and the risk of chronic diseases. The Nutrition Unit is responsible for the National Dietary Survey, the FINDIET Study, carried out every fifth year. The Unit also maintains the National Food Composition Database Fineli . The Nutrition Unit is also active in nutritional risk assessment.

Scientific & Technical Team

Name: Dr. Liisa M. Valsta
Role: Principal investigator of the Partner 11 in this project, senior researcher in the Nutrition Unit at the National Public Health Institute (KTL). Dr. Valsta will be in charge of coordinating and organizing the tasks of this project in Finland.
Experience: Ph.D. (Human Nutrition), M.Sc. (Food Science and Technology/Food Toxicology). Main research interests in the area of food composition/quality of diet, metabolic responses and health. In addition she has long experience in methodological and practical aspects of monitoring diet and nutritional status, nutritional risk assessment, and developing food databases in national and in international collaborative projects.

Name:Professor Pirjo Pietinen
Role: Head of the Nutrition Unit and Chair of the Nutritional Risk Assessment Project.
Experience: D.Sc. (Human Nutrition), over 30 years of experience in research, both in nutritional epidemiological studies on nutrition and chronic diseases (the ATBC Cancer Prevention Study), dietary surveys, dietary assessment methodologies, and dietary interventions. She has published over 200 original peer-reviewed publications.

Name: Heli Reinivuo, M.Sc.
Role: She is nutritionist and manager of the National Food Composition Database Fineli , and is involved also in carrying out and analyses of food surveys.
Experience: Food composition databases, food classifications, food consumption measurement methodology

Name: Harri Sinkko, M.Sc.
Role: He is the statistician in the Nutritional Risk Assessment Project.
Experience: Deterministic and probabilistic intake estimation of both nutrients and contaminants.

Name: Heli Tapanainen, M.Sc.
Role: The statistician in the FINDIET Study.
Experience: Deterministic and probabilistic intake estimation of dietary intake.
