Project Structure

The work to be carried out in FACET is split among ten work packages: 8 research work-packages, one management and one dissemination work-package.
These work-packages are as follows:

The research work-packages will work closely together as follows:

The Chemicals group (Flavourings, Additives, Packaging Materials and Concentration work-packages):
This group will have as its focus, the target chemical type. Each will seek to determine a list of target chemicals in their given area and will then seek to ascertain relevant concentration data. In addition to concentration data, this group will propose a list of foods likely to contain the target chemicals and in that regard will interact with the “Foods group”

The Foods group (Food intake, Chemical occurrence and Regional modeling work-packages):
The food intake group will link with the chemicals group to agree definitions of food groups in order to estimate intakes of such defined food groups and will work with the Food intake database group to create suitable database architecture for food intake data. This group will work closely with the Regional Modeling Group to create the necessary input into the regional models. The occurrence group will work to procure food chemical occurrence data and will work closely with the food chemicals group.

The Database and Modelling groups (Exposure modeling work-package):
Databases will be constructed which have connectivity between intake, occurrence and concentration for each chemical. These databases will exist in tiers corresponding to the complexity of the data. The modeling group will include those involved in the packaging group in modeling migration of food contact materials into food. It will also involve almost all work-packages in agreeing algorithms for probabilistic modeling for exposure.

WP 1: Management

Description:

The management work-package will entail administration of communication within WPs, the organisation of meetings, the preparation of technical and non-technical reports and the completion of all financial obligations.

Objective:

To develop and sustain effective technical coordination and project management to successfully complete all aspects of the project, in accordance with the EC grant agreement

WP 2: Flavourings

Description:

WP 2 is further divided into 2 sub-work packages: WP 2.1 and WP 2.2. Overall this work-packages is responsible for the selection of representative flavouring substances, development of the flavouring substances concentration database and assessment of uncertainty in these data. It will also develop specific guidance in relation to flavouring substances for the collection of data during the occurrence survey, for the categorization of food products in the food consumption databases, and for the development of models of dietary exposure.

Objective:

To develop a database of concentration levels for a set of flavouring substances that represent the 2,700 currently on the market To provide specific guidance, in relation to flavouring substances for the tasks listed in WP2.2

WP 3: Additives

Description:

WP 3 is further divided into 4 sub-work packages: WP 3.1, WP 3.2, WP 3.3 and WP 3.4. Overall this work-package is responsible for food additives codification, food additives prioritization, food additives use level collection and developing food additives exposure assessment methodology.

Objective:

To propose a methodology for the codification of the national dietary surveys appropriate for EU exposure assessment to foods additives To selection high priority food additives to be studied for exposure assessment. To collect information on real usage levels for the high priority food additives defined previously Guidance to exposure assessment and to the development of dietary surveys to take into account the necessary information for food additives intake surveillance

WP 4: Packaging

Description:

WP 4 is further divided into 3 sub-work packages: WP 4.1, WP 4.2, and WP 4.3. Overall, this work-package is responsible for gathering detailed information on food packaging composition and usage, in the development of tools to establish concentrations of migrants from packaging materials in foods, and in the exploration of the use of QSAR modelling for the migrants from food packaging.

Objective:

To obtain information on the chemical composition of food packaging materials along with information on the extent and conditions of use To establish a verified modelling tool for mono and multi-layer packaging materials for migration into foods under actual conditions of use in order to deliver reliable concentration estimates for use in consumer exposure modelling. To provide a validated Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) tool to estimate the toxicity of Food Contact Substances solely from their molecular structure in order to evaluate their safety based on exposure estimates.

WP 5: Food intake

Description:

This work-package is responsible for the collation of food intake data from EU countries. They will analyse all data collated in terms of food categorization systems used, methods of data collection and linguistic definitions of foods and food groups. They will also create and administer the targeted food frequency questionnaires studies in areas where food consumption data is limited.

Objective:

To compile a database on food intake across geographically representative regions of the EU based on existing databases. To create and administer targeted food frequency questionnaire studies

WP 6: Chemical Occurrence

Description:

This work-package will be responsible for the purchase of specified foods in each country according to the targeted food chemicals selected by WPs 2, 3 and 4. All data on the food label will be recorded, including nutritional information, ingredients and packaging types will also be recorded.

Objective:

To construct a database on the occurrence of selected food additives, food flavouring substances and food contact materials in representative regions of the EU

WP 7: Regional Modelling

Description:

WP 7 is further divided into 2 sub-work packages: WP 7.1 and WP 7.2. Overall, this work-package is responsible for the development and validation of regional food consumption models, food grouping systems and in model design and testing. This work-package will also be involved in the development and validation of the regional food frequency questionnaires and in final model validation.

Objective:

To collaborate with other WPs to develop suitable food grouping systems and a modeling framework for estimating consumption for the defined food groupings for all EU member states, and test the method with known data sets. To obtain new targeted food frequency questionnaire data to validate the predictions of the model and finalise the food consumption database suitable for deterministic or probabilistic modeling.

WP 8: Modelling and Databases

Description:

WP 8 is further divided into 2 sub-work packages: WP 8.1 and WP 8.2. Overall this work-package is responsible for model design and validation, algorithm development, uncertainty analysis and software integration. This work-package will also create an online database manager that will handle all databases and information collected during the project.

Objective:

To develop models, algorithms and integrate the exposure assessment tool to handle the available data and uncertainty to provide an online system for data collection and collaboration. To work with food experts in other WP’s and the data generated in the project to validate the models developed. To provide an online system for data collection and collaboration for the project. To work with food experts in WP 2, 3, 4 and the data generated in the project. To validate and refine the models developed.

WP 9: Concentration Data

Description:

This work-package will be responsible for gathering information on the technological use of the targeted food additives and in collecting information on the ranges of concentrations of each additives in the food categories.

Objective:

To provide a database on the likely technological use of selected food additives in targeted foods. To populate the database with additive concentration ranges.

WP 10: Dissemination

Description:

The dissemination work-package will entail the establishment of an effective communication process to end users.

Objective:

To communicate the aims and objectives of the project to a wide audience and to disseminate the results and findings from the project, both during and on completion of the project. To disseminate the development results from the software models developed in WP8.
