Professor Jens Bleiel is a German national and a business economist by training. He started his career at a management consultant company in Germany in the business segments of strategy, organization and personnel. After 5 years, he joined Dutch company Numico and held several management and executive functions in the baby food branch of the company (Milupa, Nutricia, Cow&Gate, amongst other brands). His assignments brought him to Argentina, Germany and the Netherlands. His last function was Global Marketing Director Infant Milks. After 10 years in this business, Jens Bleiel joined Dutch multinational DSM, world market leader in vitamins and other food ingredients. As Senior Vice President Metabolic Health Products, he built up the functional food business in the area of metabolic health products, one of the biggest health concerns in the world today.
In August 2009, Jens Bleiel was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Food for Health Ireland. FHI, a public-private partnership sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and involving UCD, University College Cork, University of Limerick and Teagasc Moorepark, together with the guidance and support of four Irish dairy companies, Dairygold Food Ingredients Ltd, Glanbia Plc, Carbery Group and Kerry Group, was established in 2008 to develop new functional food ingredients and products. The programme has just entered its second phase, which will predominately focus on commercialising the science of phase 1 and will be headquartered at UCD.
Professor Tom Arnold is the current Chairman of the Convention on the Constitution. The Convention, consisting of 100 members, including 66 citizens chosen to be representative of the population, 33 politicians and an independent Chairman, has been established to review aspects of the Irish Constitution and recommend changes where it considers necessary.
At the time of his appointment as Chairman of the Convention, Tom Arnold was CEO of Concern Worldwide, a position he held since October 2001. He was previously Assistant Secretary General and Chief Economist in the Department of Agriculture and Food in Ireland. Tom has served on a number of high level bodies including the UN Millennium Project’s Hunger Task Force, the Irish Hunger Task Force, the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund’s (CERF) Advisory Group, the European Food Security Group (EFSG) and the Irish Government’s Commission on Taxation. He served as Chairman of the OECD Committee for Agriculture from 1993 to 1998.
He served on the Board of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) charged with leading the reform of the international agriculture research system from 2010 to 2012. He is a member of the International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI) Advisory Board. In April 2012, he was appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon to the Lead Group of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. He is Chairperson of the Irish Times Trust and a Director of the Irish Times and is also a member of the Advisory Board of the UCD Institute of Food and Health.
Tom is a graduate in Agricultural Economics from University College Dublin and has Masters Degrees from the Catholic University of Louvain and Trinity College Dublin. He has received Honorary Doctorates of Laws from the National University of Ireland and Science from University College Dublin.
