Two Institute Members receive SFI Investigator Award

27th March 2015

Congratulations to Professors John O'Doherty and Torres Sweeney who have received an SFI Investigator Award to study the use of seaweed as an alternative to antibiotics in animals. The preventative and therapeutic properties of seaweed is well established and the objective of their research is to characterise the molecules in native macroalgae that have health promoting properties; develop the large-scale methodologies to purify them; and explore commercial avenues for them in the animal feed industry.

Professor John Doherty and Professor Torres Sweeney with Professor Martin Steinhoff, UCD; Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English TD; and Professor Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland.
