40X20 INTERVARSITIES REPORT & RESULTS, KINGSCOURT 2006
by Dunny Maguire
A new Champion in his final year of Intervarsity Handball is how the 2006 All Ireland 40x20 Intervarsity Singles Championship will be remembered by most Charly Shanks playing in his last competitive match for QUB won his first Men’s Open Singles title in Kingscourt at the weekend.
The Tournament started early on Friday morning with the 142 competitors arriving from the many Third Level Institutions throughout the country. This is the one of the largest Irish Handball Tournaments in the calendar, probably second only to the FBD Insurance Irish Nationals. The new Drop Down Format has proved to be a resounding success giving all players regardless of ability the chance to play competitively against their peers.
Throughout Friday play continued with players either dropping down or jumping up to grades depending on their losses / successes. On Friday evening following end of play, a good crowd of players went to the Kingscourt Handball Club Table Quiz. Others who stayed in Kells, headed to a few local establishments and drank the bars dry of Lucozade such was their dedication to the cause that lay before them on Saturday morning.
On Saturday morning, the shock of the tournament occurred when Dessie Keegan (DIT), the defending Open Champion was sensationally knocked out by Ricki O’Gara of NUIG in the first round. O’Gara was later defeated by Brian Carroll (DIT in the semis. In the Ladies Draw, Maria Daly (UCC), also a defending champion had an easy run in to the final. Seeded number 2, Eimear Ní Fhallúin (UCD) faced a similarly easy path to the final. These two great rivals for the past number of years faced off in one of the best games of Ladies Handball seen in a very long time. Despite their young age, they showed that both are capable of winning a Senior All Ireland in the not too distant future. In the final played on Saturday evening, Daly looked ever so slightly sharper and took the title in two games.
Following the semi finals on Saturday evening, the first AGM of An Comhairle Árd Oideachas Liathróid Láimhe / Irish Collegiate Handball Association took place in front of a crowd of over 80. On the agenda was Affiliation to CLLÉ, Funding, Tournament venues and Election of Officers. It was the unanimous decision of those present to seek immediate affiliation to Comhairle Liathróid Láimhe na h-Éireann and that a proposal should be sent to An Coiste Bainistí CLLÉ as soon as possible. Members also resolved to seek a Group Discount in terms of player registration fees to CLLÉ. The venues for the Intervarsities of ‘06/’07 were decided as follows: 40x20 Singles: 60x30 C-Ships:40x20 Team:
The Team Venue went down to a vote between Clare and Belfast with Clare winning out with one vote to spare following the distribution of second preferences. This was a great sign for the future as it shows that people really care about the future of Intervarsity Handball in Ireland.
The out going Executive was re-elected as follows:Cathaoirleach: Rúnaí: Cisteoir:
A new position of PRO was filled by Rachel Casey of Carlow IT. Rachel will work with the Rúnaí in promoting our sport to the wider media. The four Provincial Reps are as follows:Laighin: Mumhan: Uladh: Connacht:
Following the exploits from Friday and Saturday, all the players took a well deserved break from handball…well playing that is, and headed to the Dún A Rí Hotel in Kingscourt for some friendly banter, dancing, kissing and drinking!! A great night was had by all and by especially by those who retired to the hotel rooms early, you all know who ye are!!!
Finals kicked off on Sunday at 12pm with Uachtarán, CLLÉ Tom Walsh in attendance. All of the players played their hearts out and the spoils were generally well shared out between the colleges. In the Open Final, Charly Shanks had the upper hand against Brian Carroll of DIT. Ger Coonan of UL defeated Chris Doolin in the A final. In the Ladies A Singles, Caitriona Casey of NUIG overcame Sharon Daly of UL.
The CAOLL / ICHA would like to thank Kingscourt (Kit, Catherine, the lovely ladies in the kitchen), Cormeen, Kells and Carrickmacross Handball Clubs. We look forward to returning next February for an even bigger tournament.

All Ireland 40x20 Intervarsities Singles Preview
All eyes are focused on Kingscourt and the surrounding area for the upcoming Intervarsity Championships at the start of February. This is sure to be a cracker of a tournament with some of the countries top young players expected to show. Based on entries received so far, turn out is expected to break 140 for the first time! Due to the large number of players and hence games, we shall be using courts in Kingscourt itself, the courts in St Pats College in Cavan, Cormeen and Kells in Meath.

Leading the charge for UCD honours in the Mens Open will be a local to Kingscourt Patrick Finnegan and hopefully this fact will play in his favour as he goes head-to-head with big-shots such as  Dessie Keegan from DIT. Dessie is the defending champion having won in Galway last year. Other notable challengers from DIT will be Brian Carroll. Brian caused a shock last year taking the 60x30 title in Kells. With solid performances in the Team Championships this season, look out for this quick footed, sharp shooter to cause another shock.
From QUB will be last years runner up in the A, Charly Shanks. The Tomahawk specialist will be looking for revenge for last years defeat in the singles and also the loss against DIT in this years Team Championship. Another challenger to Dessie’s crown will be Joe Mc Cann from SIT. Joe is the defending 60x30 Champion IV Champion and this is also his last IV. UL will also have a contender for the Mens Open in the form of Ger Coonan who has won numerous All Irelands over the years for his county, Tipperary.
With a raft of A players, this grade is without a favourite this time around. If some one comes fresh from their respective provincial championships, then they may cause shocks. Players expected to do well here would be our own Patrick Clerkin (UCD), Paul Fitzpatrick (DIT) and Donnacha Maguire (UL). Having said that, any one can win this grade especially with the new Drop Down Format.
In the Ladies Division, we are set for a major show down between long time rivals Maria Daly of UCC and new comer to the Intervarsity scene, Eimear Ní Fhallúin of UCD. Maria, who has won every Intervarsity event bar one since 2003 goes into this tournament as favourite. However, nothing is certain especially as the last time they played each other it went down to the wire. Other challengers will be Sharon Daly of UL and Emer Coyle of DIT. This year we will have record number of female participants so in total 6 female grades will be awarded.

UCD's Lyng star of the show
UCD 0-15 Garda College 0-12

UCD remain on course for a first Sigerson Cup title since 1996 after advancing to the semi-finals with a three-point victory in Templemore yesterday.

They produced an impressive attacking performance which yielded all 15 scores from play as last year’s beaten finalists, Garda, were sent packing.
Wexford’s Ciarán Lyng was the star of the show, chipping in with five points for the winners as a physically-imposing Garda outfit found UCD’s nippy forwards too hot to handle.

With the breeze at their backs, UCD pulled away before half-time to establish a 0-10 to 0-5 interval lead and although Garda rallied midway through the second half, they never looked like catching the winners.

UCD: S Gallagher; D Curran, P Kelly, M Loftus; P Kelly (0-2), C O’Sullivan, C Brady; C Murphy, J Fitzpatrick; M Gurn (0-1), T Diamond (0-1), T Warburton (0-1); C Lyng (0-5), M Ronaldson (0-3), M McGowan (0-2). Sub: C Kelly for McGowan (47 mins).

GARDA: D O’Brien; S Brehony, C McGill, R O’Connor; S Mulligan, E O’Callaghan, D Mullahy (0-1); M Cussen (0-1), M Milner; J Kavanagh (0-2), J Miskella, B Brennan; M Harrington (0-4 frees), G Brady, E Mulligan (0-2, one free). Subs: J Martin (0-2) for Miskella (inj, 27 mins), N Shevlin for Brehony (h-t), G O’Connell for Milner (47 mins).
Referee: D Cahill (Tipperary).

INTERVARSITIES ARTICLE 2005
by Donnacha Maguire 1st December 2005
Third Level Handball in Ireland is on the way up with increased participation in all grades. Throughout the course of 2005 more and more college students have started to enjoy the benefits of being in the fastest growing sector in Irish Handball.
In January, DIT Handball Club organised a One Wall Doubles tournament which was held in Croke Park. Players from UL, DIT, DCU UCD and many locals took part in what was an excellent display of One Wall Handball.

Within three weeks, we were all on our way to Galway for the 40x20 Intervarsities. Due to the large number of entrants we had to make use of 7 courts for three days. With the new drop down format, all players got at least three competitive games and it bodes well for the future. The Men’s A Winner was Dessie Keegan (DIT) with Charlie Shanks (QUB) taking the runners up position. In the Ladies A Singles, Maria Daly (UCC) had the upper hand over her sister Sharon Daly (UL).

Following the long summer break and then a hectic recruitment campaign during Freshers Week, the new and not so new members of the Colleges headed off to Roscommon for the 60x30 Intervarsities. With 70 entrants, this was the biggest 60x30 IV’s ever with 16 players from UL alone. There was some fierce competition and some even fiercer socialising done throughout the weekend.
With loads of new members here, the future is bright. In the Men’s A Singles, Joe McCann (SIT) took his first Singles title with a win over our own Patrick Finnegan (UCD).
 In the A Team, SIT had a close win over UCD. The teams were SIT: Joe McCann, Niall McGrath, Chris Doolin and Brian Brennan. UCD were composed of the following: Patrick Finnegan, Patrick Clerkin, John Horgan and Shane Hennelly. In the Ladies A Singles, Maria Daly (UCC) took her 3rd consecutive 60x30 Singles title and her 6th IV title over all with a good win over Caitriona Casey of NUIG. More results on www.handball.ie.
Next up on the Calendar will be the 40x20 Team Championships which are due to be held at Dublin Venues on the 9th-11th December. Grades available will b Men’s A, B, C and Ladies Doubles.
Following the 40x20 IV’s, all eyes will focus on the World Collegiate Handball C-Ships which are scheduled for February 2006 in College Station, Houston, Texas. With an expected Irish contingent of 40, expect big things to happen and some annoyed Americans…sure what’s new?

What is Handball?
Handball involves two or four players (singles or doubles), a ball and a few walls. Although there are variations in the size of the court (60x30 or 40x20 feet) and the nature of the ball used, the basic object of the game is to defeat your opponent in a contest requiring speed, agility, guile and skill. Handball is similar to squash without the rackets, with the player striking the ball against the front wall, in the hope they will place it where it eludes their opponent and thus deliver a point to the player who has “served”.

Over the centuries the game was played in outdoor alleys (sometimes with just a single wall) but it has now become more sophisticated and moved indoors. Competition for both sexes and all age groups take place in indoor handball courts, making the game more enjoyable than ever.

Uniquely among Irish Gaelic Games, handball has a thriving international following, being played in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Spain, France, Finland and other parts of Europe. World and European championships are now staged.

UCD HANDBALL CLUB
CLUB ACHIEVMENTS
 the 2005 season was an outstanding one with our team finishing in sixth place in the us collegiates in wisconsin. the team captain and inspiration was shane hennelly from roscommon,patrick fiinnegan the two clerkis and john horgan made up the team. we also reached the all ireland colleges final. trtemendous effoprt by the committee has revitalized the club , long may it continue.  the efforts of pat devereux , annette farrel  and our greatest supporters bridin and aidan  mulligan amongst others should not be forgotten

Last year 2004 the club won the Intervarsity event which was staged across a number of venues in Dublin. The team was captained by Shane Hennelly who doubled up with John Horgan. The two singles comprised of Tommy Lonergan and Ronan Gollogly.
Furthermore, the club won the 40x20 Dublin League beating DIT in an exciting final. Once again captain Shane Hennelly doubled up with the up and coming John Horgan. The two singles were James Clerkin and Brendan Barry with Damien McDonagh also proving useful.

Shane Hennelly and the two time USHA champion and multiple all-Ireland winner Patrick Finnegan travelled to Missouri in the United States this year having Qualified for the World Collegiates. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the senior doubles event. Also, they both departed at the quarter final stages of their respective singles tournaments.

This year is shaping up to be a very exciting one for the team with a realistic chance of sweeping the board in all-Ireland college events. The club is thriving through the efforts of students and graduates such as Alan Pearson, Bridin Ui Mhaolagan and with the very valuable assistance of GAA officer David Billings.

As of  2004 AGM this year’s committee consists of the following:
1. President                                     Aidan Mulligan
2. Chairperson                                Bridin Ui Mhaolagan
3. Club Captain                              Shane Hennelly

The Handball Club is one of the oldest established clubs in college and competes both domestically and on the International stage.

Handball involves two or four players (singles or doubles), a ball, durable hands and a few walls. Although there are variations in the size of court (60 feet x 30 feet and 40 feet x 20 feet) and in the nature of the ball used, the basic object of the game is to defeat your opponent in a contest requiring speed, agility, guile and skill. Handball is like squash without the rackets, with the players striking the tiny ball against the front wall (later using the other walls), in the hope that they will place it where it eludes their opponent and thus deliver another point to the player who has "served".
Over the centuries the game was played in outdoor ball alleys (in the early days it was often played with just a single wall) but it has now become more sophisticated and moved indoors. Competition for both sexes and all age groups now take place in plush, enclosed handball courts, making the game faster than ever and certainly more exciting and entertaining.
Uniquely among Irish Gaelic Games, handball has a thriving international dimension, being played in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Spain and other parts of Europe. World and European championships are now staged. (Taken from Official GAA Website www.gaa.ie)

The club had a great year in 2001 winning the Intervarsity Blitz and performing well in the 40x20 intervarsites in Tralee.  The 1st Team comprised of Alan Pearson (1st Singles) Brendan Barry and Thomas Lonergan (Doubles) and Séan Óg Gargan (2nd Singlesdid very well reaching the semi final disposing of DIT and DCU along the way. The 2nd team also palyed well and all team members took part in the single competition with four UCD players reaching the last 16. Outside the intervarsity circuit the club was represented by past and present members in the Dublin Spring League where they faced the Garda team in the quarter finals and O’Tooles A in the semi final who narrowly beat them on aggregate score.

The club continues to thrive through the efforts of students and Graduates such as Pat Lacy, Pat Devereux, Annette Farrell, the bedrock of the club Bridin Ui Mhaolagan and with the valuable assistance of GAA Officer David Billings.

As of the last AGM this years committee 2003/04 will consist of the following.
* President  Aidan Mulligan
* Chairperson shane hennelly
* Club Captain Alan MacPiarais
* Senior Treasurer Oisin O’hAnnaidh
* P.R.O  sean og gargan
