Welcome to UCD's Sigerson Cup 2011
Celebrating 100 years of college football
UCD would like to thank everyone who played a role in assisting with the hosting the finals stages of Centenary Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup competition in Belfield from March 3rd – 5th 2011. The Sigerson Cup is the premier Gaelic Football Competition for third level institutions, named after Dr. George Sigerson who was Professor of Biology in the Catholic University School of Medicine and later the National University. The cup was first presented in 1911, when UCD were inaugural winners.
A hearty congratulations to UCC on their great win in 2011, taking the hard route to the final to take the cup down to Cork. Well done to the team and management. We can be assured of another great competition next year as the Rebels defend their title.
UCD still tops the roll of honour with 32 Sigerson Cup titles, our greatest era being in the 1970s when we won the title six times in seven years. These Sigerson Cup wins proved to be the launch pad for success further afield, as UCD went on to add two All-Ireland Championship wins in 1974 and 1975.
Given that the event is named after a UCD man and UCD’s central role throughout the history of the competition, it is fitting that UCD would hosted the centenary competition here on campus. In addition to the hosting the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup, UCD hosted the latter stages of the Trench Cup, Corn na Mac Leinn and Further Education Championship.
This couldn't have been achieved without our dedicated organising committee, tireless volunteers and our sponsors. Thanks again to all involved.
