PFL Final Results Conference

PFL Final Results Conference

This year marked the launch of the results of Preparing for Life (PFL), a ground-breaking early childhood intervention conducted by The Geary Institute for Public Policy, in collaboration with Northside Partnership, The Atlantic Philanthropies and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.  Key note speakers included Dr Kieran O’Donnell, McGill University and the Ludmer Centre, Professor Richard Tremblay UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science and University of Montreal and representatives from the government and policy sectors - Senator Áodhán O’Riordáin, Environment and Sustainable Development and Gaeltacht Affairs and Mr Fergal Lynch, Secretary General, Department of Children and Youth Affairs. From 2008 to 2015, the evaluation team at Geary followed the journey of families who agreed to participate in a randomised control trial (RCT), with the aim of improving children’s school readiness in a disadvantaged community of Dublin. The programme had a positive and significant impact across several domains including cognitive development, social and emotional development and physical wellbeing and motor development. The programme also demonstrated the benefits of mutual collaboration between the academic and policy community for delivering sustained policy and societal impacts.
