Labour Markets

Understanding the ‘micro’ components of labour and other markets plays a fundamental and vital role in decision making by individuals, households, firms and government departments. It has transformed policy research domains such as inequality and poverty, productivity, and regulation/competition. This is true in the context of both the developed and developing world and both are represented in the work agenda of the Institute. The Institute has a concentration of experienced researchers in both microeconometric applications and in the development of econometric methodology for such applications.

Irish University Study

The Irish Universities Study is a web-based survey examining the 3rd and 4th level student population in the seven Irish universities: Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick, Dublin City University, National University of Ireland Maynooth, University College Dublin, University College Cork and National University of Ireland Galway. The study uses web-surveying techniques which are more flexible, cost effective and rapid than conventional methods of data gathering. It is intended that the project will create a longitudinal database; individuals will be followed up as they progress through the university system.

Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a longitudinal, multidisciplinary and cross-national panel database of micro data on health, socio-economic status and social and family networks of more than 30,000 individuals aged 50 or over. SHARE is coordinated centrally at the Mannheim Research Institute for the Economics of Aging (MEA). SHARE’s scientific power is based on its panel design that grasps the dynamic character of the ageing process. SHARE’s multidisciplinary approach delivers the full picture of the ageing process and rigorous procedural guidelines and programs ensure an ex-ante harmonized cross-national design.

Youth Inequalities

The education of young people, particularly those from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds, is one of the great challenges facing European governments. Education is a crucial investment both for the country as a whole (in ensuring economic competitiveness and social integration) and for the individuals concerned, in helping them to avoid unemployment and secure skilled and secure employment.
