UCD Welcomes Guest Artist from Institut Seni Indonesia

University College Dublin is delighted to welcome Pak Sumiyoto, our very first Guest Artist from Institut Seni Indonesia which is the number one ranked Performing Arts institute in Asia (QS Ranking 2018). Mr. Sumiyoto has been sponsored by the Indonesian government to spend time in Dublin teaching gamelan in conjunction with the UCD School of Music and the National Concert Hall. 

Gamelan is the traditional ancient classical music of Indonesia. The UCD Gamelan Orchestra was built in 2002 by Pak Mulyono and in 2012 became the first regular gamelan ensemble to exist in Dublin. In 2014, the Indonesian Embassy to Dublin generously gifted gamelan instruments to the National Concert Hall.

Sumiyoto’s presence at UCD highlights the strong links forged through ongoing creative collaboration and engagement between Ireland and Indonesia in the performing arts.
