GIS Seminar Series

The recent Geographic Information System (GIS) Usage Survey done in UCD showed that the lack of awareness about capabilities of GIS is the biggest obstacle of using it in UCD. Currently, GIS is used worldwide in a growing number of disciplines from public health to sociology to geography, geology, archaeology, history, planning, business etc. It can facilitate and enhance research at many levels essentially.

Taking these into account, UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy (GPEP) is organising a series of seminars, where various applications of GIS and Geo-Spatial techniques will be presented by experienced GIS Researchers and Experts from UCD or elsewhere. The main goal is to increase awareness how GIS can address different research questions; and also boost research collaboration and data sharing between UCD researchers.

Seminar 1

Friday, November 9, 2012 (13:00-14:00)
E003, Newman Building, UCD Belfield Campus

  • Dr. Peter Keenan - GIS in Business
  • Dr. Harutyun Shahumyan - Spatial Pattern Analysis and Opportunity Mapping for Ireland

See program.

Free GIS Clinic

Thursdays, 3pm - 5pm

Bring your GIS questions, problems, or just stop by to talk about your GIS-related work with an experienced GIS expert and researcher. This free clinic is open to all UCD staff, researchers and students, with priority given to the College of Human Sciences. Anyone who is interested in using GIS or currently uses GIS is welcome to visit. The clinic is designed to provide advice to GIS users on data management, processing and application development and to counsel the prospective and novice users with regard to furthering their GIS knowledge. An appointment is recommended.

For more information or to make an appointment contact Dr. Harutyun Shahumyan (ext. 8103 or 2714).

Collaboration

GeoSAL is developing working collaborations with different research instituts, industry partners and other organisations.

UII photo  UCD Urban Institute Ireland (UII) maintains "URBIS" spatial data warehouse, which includes valuable GIS datasets from different sources, such as AnPost GeoDirectory,  OSI townlands and administrative boundaries, CORINE land cover maps, etc. In UCD the UII is also the main licence holder of specialised software packages such as ArcGIS Server and ERDAS Imagine.
Earth Institute logo  UCD Earth Institute has the range and depth of expertise to understand the relationships between energy, the environment, climate change and hazards; to relate science to policy, and support the challenge to meet our climate change and energy obligations.
CSTAR Logo CSTAR is the Centre for Support and Training in Analysis and Research. It specialises in the biostatistical and methodological areas of health research, both quantitative and qualitative.
