2 PhD Teaching Assistantship in Geography

The School of GPEP operates a Structured PhD programme which is the default programme in the College of Human Sciences.  This has proven to be highly successful and enables our PhD students to achieve the best possible experience of graduate research and training. Making a substantial and original contribution to knowledge, normally leading to peer-reviewed publications, remains the core objective of doctoral studies in the School. We offer structured PhDs in each of the major disciplinary areas of the School

Menelaos Gkartzios (PhD Graduate)

"I undertook a PhD degree at the UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy in the fields of Spatial Planning and Rural Geography (2004-2008). During my studies, my professional development was enhanced through developing skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods, attending specialised seminars, gaining consultancy experience and becoming a better communicator by presenting my work in numerous international research conferences and workshops. While in UCD, I was part of a group of researchers and academic staff focusing on planning and rural studies. This group provided continuous challenging and constructive reviews of my work in a supportive working environment. Additionally, I got the opportunity to live in and get to know a new city and a new country, both of which continue to amaze me. Following my doctoral studies, I worked as a Research Fellow at UCD, until my appointment as a Lecturer in Rural Development at the Centre for Rural Economy in Newcastle University."
