School of GPEP operates a series of Research Masters degrees. We offer Research Masters degrees in each of the major disciplinary areas of the School

The School of GPEP is committed to providing excellent facilities and training for research students, including well-equipped research suites for students with state-of-the-art computing facilities (including high-spec GIS technology), on-site library services, access to taught modules across the College of Human Sciences Graduate School and regular student and staff seminars. All research students are supervised by one or more members of the academic staff and with a recognised expertise in a field related to your area of study.

Ruth Comerford (B.A, M.A) current PhD student

"For as long as I can remember I have wanted to study Geography, receiving strong encouragement at home to go out and experience “the world beyond the hall door which is waiting for you to see it". My studies within the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy in UCD have made this happen.

"As soon as I sat in my first Geography lecture in Theatre Q I knew I had made the right choice both in what discipline to study but also in deciding to spend the next few years in UCD, little did I know I would still be here now! The school continues to offer an increasing diverse range of modules for undergraduate choice from areas within Human, Social and Physical Geography but also Planning and Environmental Studies. Significant emphasis is placed on engaging with the students through a variety of teaching methods, some of which include modules with online content but also fieldtrips which allow the students to experience firsthand what they have heard about in lectures. The interactions in these classes and away from the lecture theatres have created many new friendships along the way. Once I received my B.A. in 2003 I grasped the opportunity to visit the cultures and destinations I had studied but at the back of my mind I had always intended to return to UCD for postgraduate study. The academic interests of the staff and the welcoming nature of the school made my return in 2006, to undertake an MA in Geography, an obvious decision. My research skills and interests which developed during this time, along with encouragement from the staff, led me to my current undertaking of a PhD. My area of research crosses various fields of academic interest offered by the school including Urban Geography, Urban Design and Planning. After my time in UCD I feel I will enter the world of academia well equipped with the skills I need to move forward and contribute to the growing field of geographic research."
